Prime facts of Atal tunnel rohtang

The 9.02 km-long-tunnel, built by the Border Roads Organization (BRO), is the world’s longest highway tunnel and connects Manali (south potal) to Lahaul-Spiti valley(North portal). Atal tunnel provides all-weather road connectivity to the Lahaul-Spiti valley, which remains cut-off for nearly six months in a year as the Rohtang Pass is usually snow-bound between November and April.

Prime Facts:

The tunnel reduces the distance by 46 km between Manali and Leh and the travel time by about 4 to 5 hours. It is expected to boost tourism and winter sports in the region.

Atal tunnel is horseshoe-shaped, single tube double lane tunnel with a roadway of 8 metres. It has an overhead clearance of 5.525 metres. Also, it is 10.5-metre wide and has a 3.6 x 2.25 metres fire-proof emergency egress tunnel built into the main tunnel itself. There are 18 egress tunnels where after every 500 metres there is an opening in case of emergency. If any fire incident happens so first thing is how the people trapped are to be rescued. For that there is an entry at every 500 metres.

Essential commodities like petrol and vegetable supplies would also likely be available throughout the year.

According to PM Narendra Modi, farmers, horticulturalists, and youth will now also have easy access to the capital of Delhi and other markets. It benefits farmers as now their precious crops like peas and potatoes will no longer rot in trucks before reaching the market.
